Youper details reflect its public listing and website before it closed, and its shutdown notices. Checked October 2026.

What happened to Youper

In early August 2026 a notice went up on youper.ai: the company was closing and winding down, and all services would end on September 30, 2026. Users had until that date to export their data from the app. Youper's own terms state that on or about October 1, 2026 every account, conversation and backup was permanently deleted, and that no user data was sold or transferred. Auto-renewing subscriptions were switched off, and Youper said prepaid users would receive refund instructions by email. No reason was given.

Youper deserves credit for how it closed: a clear date, an export tool, and a straight answer about the data. For seven years it was one of the few apps built around an actual conversation about your mood rather than a worksheet, and it was studied seriously. If it worked for you, you had good taste.

What to look for in a replacement

If you used Youper, you already know what you want: something you can talk to, not a library of exercises. Three things are worth checking in whatever you try next.

  1. 1
Does it remember you? Starting from zero every time is the thing people miss most when an app closes. Look for memory across conversations, not just within one.
  2. 2
Who designed the conversation? Ask whether licensed therapists shaped how it responds and where its limits are, and who oversees it now.
  3. 3
What happens when you need a person? The honest answer is sometimes a human. A path to one, built in, is worth more than another exercise.

How Abby thinks

Between your message and her reply there is a process, designed with licensed therapists. It is the reason the right question tends to show up at the right moment, and it is the part of Abby we are proudest of.

  1. 1
Saves your story. Every conversation adds to what she knows about you, so you never start from zero.
  2. 2
Connects to your memories. She links what you just said to what you told her weeks or months ago.
  3. 3
Spots the pattern. The thing that keeps coming back, even when it shows up wearing a different story.
  4. 4
Finds the thing underneath. Then asks the one question that gets you there, instead of ten that do not.

What else Abby does

Checks in first

Mention a rough week coming up and she checks in each morning of it. Daily, or only when it matters. You choose.

Becomes who you need

Six personalities, from Empathetic Friend to Tough Coach, plus how much she says, how she responds, and how hard she pushes back.

Voice or text

Type at 2am or talk on the walk home. Same memory, same Abby.

88 languages

Talk in the language you think in. Switch mid-sentence and she follows.

Trusted for 10,000,000+ conversations.

Where Youper and Abby differed

Memory and voice

Abby remembers your story across conversations and works by voice or text. Youper was text, inside one app, and its memory left with it.

The path to a person

Abby matches you with a licensed therapist for free, using what she already knows about you. Youper did not.

Still here

Abby is designed with licensed therapists, guided by an Ethics & Safety Board, and in use for 10,000,000+ conversations. Whatever you pick next, ask who is behind it and how long they plan to be around.

Which should you pick

Try something else if

  • You mainly used Youper for structured CBT exercises and mood tracking. Wysa has the deepest exercise library.
  • You only want a phone app and want to compare another conversation-first option. Ash is the other one worth trying.
  • You are in crisis. No app is the right place for that: call or text 988, or call 911.

Pick Abby if

  • You liked talking to Youper about what was actually going on, and want that back with memory that lasts.
  • You want voice as well as text, on your phone or a laptop.
  • You think you may need a real therapist at some point. The matching is free and built in.

Abby is free to start, so the low-risk move is to have one conversation and see whether it lands. If you are in crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

Common questions

Can I still get my Youper data?

No. Youper's notice said data could be exported until September 30, 2026 and that all accounts, conversations and backups were permanently deleted on or about October 1, 2026. Youper also said the data was not sold or transferred to anyone.

Will I get a refund from Youper?

Youper said auto-renewing subscriptions were turned off and that prepaid users would receive refund instructions by email. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, you can also request a refund from Apple or Google directly.

Is Abby like Youper?

In the way that matters, yes: an open conversation about what is on your mind rather than a set of exercises. Abby adds memory across conversations, voice, 88 languages, and free matching to a licensed therapist.

Is Abby free?

Abby is free to start. After that it is $19.99 a month or $99 a year.

Is Abby a therapist?

No. Abby is software. Therapy is clinical care from a licensed professional, and Abby can match you with one for free.
